How To Build A Simple Wash Day Routine

A wash day routine is an important part of maintaining healthy and defined textured hair. Whether you have curly, kinky, or coily hair, a proper wash day routine will help keep your hair moisturized, detangled, and looking its best. But with so many products, tools, and techniques to choose from, building a simple wash day routine can seem overwhelming. Here's how to build a simple wash day routine for textured hair..

Step 1: Shampoo

Choose a sulfate-free shampoo to avoid stripping your hair of its natural oils. Depending on what your hair needs this week, pick between a clarifying and a moisturizing shampoo. Wet your hair thoroughly, then apply a small amount of shampoo to your scalp. Massage your scalp with your fingertips, then rinse thoroughly. Repeat the shampoo process if necessary, but avoid over-shampooing, as this can lead to dryness.

Step 2: Conditioner

Conditioner is essential for detangling and moisturizing your textured hair. After shampooing, apply a generous amount of conditioner to your hair, focusing on the ends. Use a wide-tooth comb, detangling brush, or your fingers to gently detangle your hair. You can leave the conditioner on for a little or rinse off immediately after detangling.

Step 3: Deep Conditioner

A deep conditioner is an important part of your wash day routine. It helps to repair damaged hair and restore its natural moisture balance. Apply a deep conditioner to your hair and cover with a plastic cap. Leave the treatment on for 15-30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Step 4: Styling

After deep conditioning, your hair should be soft, detangled, and ready for styling. If you feel the need to, use a leave-in conditioner to add extra moisture. Then apply a styling product of your choice, such as a mousse (my personal fav) or gel. Use a wide-tooth comb, a detangling brush, or your fingers to distribute the product evenly, then style as desired. Remember the more water, the better when styling!

Pro Tip: If you are washing your hair in the shower, wait until the very end to wash yourself up to avoid body acne.
